Editing Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (section) on wikipedia

I read the book over Christmas break and just fell in love with the people in the story. As we learned about editing in wikipedia, I thought I'd search for "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan". I found it, and was given the story to edit. It was a fun experience. You can try this at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Flower_and_the_Secret_Fan. Click on edit page and have fun.

I found this wiki space website which is very interesting. It's a good way to start a project on family history.

Create a free wiki space now. It's fast, easy, and complete free.
Wiki Space
You can create a wiki page about any person, place, or thing. You control who can view the page and who can edit it.
Teachers and Students: Please note that this is WikiSpace.com not Wiki Spaces. This site is part of WikiTree. The WikiSpace here is primarily intended for family history and historical information. It is perfect for teachers and students who are doing history, biography, and family tree projects.

Also, there are some links on the Intel CD for us to create students' wiki. One example was a class that started a story chain. It's like a never ending story. It's protected site, so students don't have to be concerned about the stories being changed to something not expected.

more on RSS feed

I'm following 11 RSS feeds on education, technology, current news, etc. Instead of going to each site, they are all listed right on my blog.

RSS Feed on opencourseware

My attention went to MIT OpenCourseWare, "kitchen chemistry". It reminds me of my Tennessee days when I taught the gifted program. I was fascinated by my friend, Julia Craze, who did "kitchen chemistry" as part of her 5th grade science. I picked up the program and had a lot of fun with it.
Shortly after, Oak Ridge National Lab invited me to their "elementary science teacher's academy" to become a certified elementary science teacher. We did many "kitchen chemistry" and more classes. We worked 3 summers and I was able to finish the coursework to get my master of science degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

getting to know you...

I spent a lot of time this long weekend reading the posts from my students on "getting to know you...". It makes a great difference to me when I know my students more than just their names, elementary or secondary eduction.

I have students who teach piano lessons, are baseball coaches, homemakers, retired policeman, military and more. Wow, the experiences they are bringing into education is phenomenal. I feel so fortunate to be working with them.

First Wimba Class

Jan. 14, 2010

Our first wimba class took place on Jan. 14 at 2:30. I opened up the room at 2:15 and 2 people showed up right after. I put up an agenda on the e-board on what we should accomplish that day.

Shortly after the class started, I counted 15 people in there. I inquired about the rest and was told some were in the chatroom. I did tell the students to go into the chatroom if for any reason they couldn't get into the wimba room. So, I was toggling between chatroom and wimba room. Chatroom seemed to do ok because we just chatted there and I posted the assignments/work for them to do. But the Wimba room got a little chaotic. Some couldn't get their mic up, others didn't have any video set up. I finally got the message across that each was supposed to do the assignments on the e-board, then post the answers on the discussion board. A couple of students couldn't find the discussion board. It was a little crazy.

By the time the class was over, I was exhausted. Luckily, this is a hybrid and we'll see each other face2face next Tuesday to iron things out. My goal is to decrease the number students not able to get into Wimba. I will also divide up the students and let them do team work and gather them back into the chatroom unless we fixed the glitches in the wimba room.

Wimba Classroom

Jan. 12, 2010

Today I presented Wimba classroom to my classes. It was fun and exciting. We are all anticipating attending classes in the Wimba room.

What is Wimba?
Wimba is a suite of online communication tools. It includes a live virtual classroom with 2-way audio, video, interactive whiteboard, computer desktop sharing and chat. Other tools allow teachers to easily post audio podcasts, audio email, and voice announcements on the web. Higher education users also have course authoring and instant messaging tools.

The Utah Education Network licenses the tool for educational use within Utah?s public schools, colleges and universities.
